Am I eligible to vote in South Dakota?

To be eligible to vote in South Dakota, you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States of America

  • A resident of South Dakota

  • 18 years of age by Election Day

You are not eligible to vote in South Dakota if you:

  • Are a convicted felon currently serving a sentence, e.g. prison time, probation, parole

  • Have been judged by a legal court to be mentally incompetent

  • By Mail: October 21, 2024

  • In-person: October 21, 2024

How do I request an absentee ballot in South Dakota?

If you are eligible to vote, you can receive an absentee ballot by downloading, filling out, and mailing an absentee ballot application to your County Election Official. Once your application has been approved, they will then send you an absentee ballot that you can fill out and mail back.

It is worth noting that, once the absentee voting period begins, residents of South Dakota can fill out an absentee ballot in person at their County Auditor's office before Election Day.

What do I need to bring to the polls in South Dakota?

If you vote at a polling place, you will be required to prove your identity. You can do this by showing approved forms of photo identification, such as:

  • A South Dakota driver's license

  • U.S. government photo ID, e.g., a passport

  • U.S. military ID

  • Tribal ID

  • Student ID (if your school is a South Dakota high school or an accredited educational institution)

If you do not have any of these photo IDs, you can sign an affidavit attesting to your identity.

What special accommodations are available?

Voters with disabilities have many voting options in South Dakota. If you are disabled, you can vote early or on election day with an absentee ballot. If you prefer to cast your ballot at the polls, you can request assistance from an election worker.

Additionally, voters with disabilities have access to an ExpressVote machine at their polling place. The ExpressVote machine provides disabled voters with a range of options for making their ballot choices and then casting their ballot.
