Am I eligible to vote in Massachusetts?

To be eligible to vote in Massachusetts, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age on Election Day, and a resident of Massachusetts. You can register to vote as soon as you move; there is no required residency period.

You can pre-register to vote as early as age 16. Then, when you turn 18, you are automatically registered to vote. Your local election office will mail you an acknowledgment notice, which is confirmation that your name has been moved to the list of registered voters. Your acknowledgment notice will include your party affiliation if you choose one, and the location of your polling place.

How do I request an absentee ballot in Massachusetts?

You must have a reason to request an absentee ballot in Massachusetts. This could be that you won't be in town on Election Day or have a physical disability that prevents you from going to the polls.

There are two ways to request an absentee ballot — both of which must be done by 12 p.m. the day before Election Day (or, for Sunday or holiday elections, by 5 p.m. on the last business day before the election):

  • Download an online application

  • Send a letter to a local election official

It is important to state on your application whether you need the ballot for one election or all of this year's elections. Generally, you will need to register for a new absentee ballot each year. If, however, you have a permanent physical disability, you can provide a doctor's note to receive applications every year.

Once you receive your application, you can submit it in-person, by mail, by fax, or by email (signed and scanned). Remember that your ballot must be returned by the close of polls on Election Day.

If you are a military member or are living overseas, you can use the FVAP website to request an absentee ballot.
