Am I eligible to vote in Virginia?

In order to vote in Virginia, you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen

  • 18 years or older

  • A resident of Virginia

  • Registered to vote (and can't be registered in other states)

Those who are unable to vote in the state of Virginia include people who've been declared mentally incompetent by the court and people who've been convicted of a felony. Convicted felons who are not serving a sentence and have restored their right to vote may vote in Virginia elections.

When is Virginia's voter registration deadline?

  • Online/By Mail: October 15, 2024

  • In-person: November 15, 2024

How do I request an absentee ballot in Virginia?

You can request an absentee ballot by completing an online form. From there, you can check the status of your absentee ballot on the Citizen Portal. Military and overseas voters can use write-in absentee ballots. 

What do I need to bring to the polls in Virginia?

Everyone must present a photo ID in order to vote in-person on election day in Virginia. Some of the many acceptable forms of photo IDs include a:

  • Virginia driver's license

  • Virginia ID card or Veteran's ID card

  • Valid U.S. passport

  • Government-issued photo ID card (or an ID issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia)

  • Tribal enrollment card (or Tribal ID cards issued by any one of the 11 tribes recognized in Virginia)

What special accommodations are available?

No matter what your disability status is, everyone in Virginia who is eligible has the right to vote. Polling locations must meet accessibility requirements, which include:

  • Accessible parking spaces

  • Accessible routes for entering the polling location

  • Magnifiers for reading ballots

  • Notepads and writing utensils for non-verbal communicators

If a disability prevents a voter from visiting a polling location, they may vote by mail, in-person absentee, or through curbside voting.
